APEX - a significantly new material developed by The Davy Roll Company.
APEX employs a refined microstructure and harder carbide reinforcement, to give extended life and better performance in flat rolling mills.
Specialised melting and casting techniques are employed to produce three improvements and enhancements to the microstructure.
The first development is the reduction of the particle size of the graphite, from compacted flakes to tiny spherical spots. This removes any tendency for the graphite to act as a weak plane for cracking. It also improves the chances of any arising mechanical crack striking a graphite particle, blunting the crack tip, and aiding in preventing further crack propagation. This therefore makes the material very suitable to resisting mechanical damage from the mill.
The second improvement involves the production of a more consistent carbide distribution throughout the shell thickness, which improves the wear performance in later life.
The third advance makes use of the technology developed for High Speed Steel rolls, where the microstructure is made to include a proportion of extra-hard alloy carbides, in addition to the standard carbide composition. These extra carbides are achieved by melting the necessary alloys in the original liquid iron and growing them as part of the natural microstructure, so that they are distributed within both the matrix and the normal carbide phases. These harder carbides simply enhance the wear resistance of the material.
